When Jesus was on the cross… He has said few words, and that words continue to resonate even until today. Those words are worth remembering over and over again. Today let me just take the fifth words of Jesus which was recorded by the Apostle John the beloved. John 19:28 after this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
Jesus coming and death on the cross definitely fulfilled the many prophecies concerning Him. Luke recorded this word of Jesus “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished (Luke 18:31 NKJV).
John recorded the very words of Jesus said “I thirst”! Jesus asks something that the Scriptures might be fulfilled. After hearing this word from Jesus the soldiers give him drink but not water which is good for quenching the thirst but a sour wine. And they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. (John 19:29).With this actions Psalm 69:21 was literally fulfilled. “They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
Jesus cried out “Διψῶ”- Dipso (Greek) which means “I thirst” Yes, could be, because of his physical exhaustion, and the excruciating pain he felt while hanging on the cross of shame.
But is that only Jesus meant? In John 7:37, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. Thirst (verb) –means have a strong desire for something.
You know when Jesus cried “I Thirst” meant also something:
1. He thirst of your fellowship - Your too busy, you have no time to pray, no time to worship , No time to have a quiet time, No time to have intimacy with Jesus. When was the last time you really close to Him? He thirsts for you.
2. He thirsts of your Love and Obedience –You say you love Him- But you cannot love others. You cannot forgive those who hurt you; you don’t really obey His Words. You just taken for granted His words to you.
3. He thirsts for You- would you fully surrender your life to Him. And let Him be your God, Saviour and Friend. He thirsts for you.
